FABER/Patrick Test

Screening test for the hip and sacroiliac joint. FABER stands for Flexion, Abduction, External Rotation. Pain location helps identify the source.

Purpose

Screen for FABER/Patrick findings.

Execution

  1. Lie supine with the pelvis neutral
  2. Place the test ankle above the opposite knee (figure-4)
  3. Stabilize the opposite pelvis
  4. Gently press the test knee toward the table
  5. Compare range and discomfort to the other side

Protocol

  1. Observe from: supine.
  2. Standardize start position and instructions.
  3. Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
  4. Record key observations and any positive indicators.
  5. Compare left vs right when applicable.
