FABER/Patrick Test
Screening test for the hip and sacroiliac joint. FABER stands for Flexion, Abduction, External Rotation. Pain location helps identify the source.
Purpose
Screen for FABER/Patrick findings.
Execution
- Lie supine with the pelvis neutral
- Place the test ankle above the opposite knee (figure-4)
- Stabilize the opposite pelvis
- Gently press the test knee toward the table
- Compare range and discomfort to the other side
Key Observations
- Distance from knee to table
- Pain location (hip vs SI region)
- Side-to-side asymmetry
Views
Protocol
- Observe from: supine.
- Standardize start position and instructions.
- Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
- Record key observations and any positive indicators.
- Compare left vs right when applicable.
