Hip Abduction Strength Test
Strength
Assessment of hip abduction strength (gluteus medius).
Purpose
Screen for Hip Abduction Strength findings.
Execution
- Lie on the side with the test leg on top
- Keep the pelvis stacked and knee straight
- Abduct the top leg against manual resistance
- Hold 3-5 seconds while resisting
- Compare left vs right
Key Observations
- <20% bodyweight indicates significant weakness
- Compare bilaterally
Views
Protocol
- Observe from: lateral.
- Standardize start position and instructions.
- Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
- Record key observations and any positive indicators.
- Compare left vs right when applicable.
