Hip Abduction Strength Test

Strength

Assessment of hip abduction strength (gluteus medius).

Purpose

Screen for Hip Abduction Strength findings.

Execution

  1. Lie on the side with the test leg on top
  2. Keep the pelvis stacked and knee straight
  3. Abduct the top leg against manual resistance
  4. Hold 3-5 seconds while resisting
  5. Compare left vs right

Protocol

  1. Observe from: lateral.
  2. Standardize start position and instructions.
  3. Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
  4. Record key observations and any positive indicators.
  5. Compare left vs right when applicable.
