Thomas Test
Flexibility
Assesses hip flexor length (psoas, rectus femoris, TFL).
Purpose
Screen for Thomas findings.
Execution
- Lie supine on a table with the pelvis neutral
- Pull one knee to the chest
- Keep the other leg relaxed on the table
- Observe hip extension and knee position
- Repeat on the other side
Key Observations
- Thigh should reach horizontal
- Knee flexion at least 80 deg
- Differentiate rectus femoris vs psoas
Views
Protocol
- Observe from: lateral.
- Standardize start position and instructions.
- Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
- Record key observations and any positive indicators.
- Compare left vs right when applicable.
